Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
