Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the option to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
